This study explored the effect of congruence on couples¡¯ marital satisfaction. The researchers, informed by the Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy (STST) model, surveyed 245 couples with children in greater Seoul. Data were analyzed from the 158 who fully completed a total of 316 questionnaires. Several interesting results were found. First, the level of the couples¡¯ marital satisfaction was affected by congruence and other psychological variables more than by social demographic variables. The interpersonal dimension of congruence also indicated significant effects. Second, intrapsychic and spiritual dimensions of congruence had only indirect effects on the level of marital satisfaction. Third, congruence affected the marital satisfaction level of husbands more than wives. Husbands were affected by their wives¡¯ intrapsychic dimensions, while wives were more affected by the interpersonal dimension of their husbands. Hence, it can be suggested that wives, more than husbands, were affected by their spouse. The results shed light on the effect of congruence on equal marital relations in Korean society.
